  • doubt :: night: “Church – why even bother?”

    September 6, 2010

I’m excited about next Monday night. Really excited.

The Renew Community is hosting another doubt :: night. Doubt :: night is one of my favorite things we do on a regular basis.

What is doubt :: night? It’s laid-back yet an intentional conversation space that allows people to speak honestly and openly about our doubts. It’s a place where we can air out our thoughts and questions relating to life, God, faith, Jesus, religion, the bible and church. This is not a lecture (I don’t talk the whole time) but more of a facilitated, intentional discussion.

The concept is simple: We pay for the appetizers. You’re on your own for drinks. We participate in a conversation together.

Rather than being afraid of our doubts, we’ve found there is deep freedom in honestly acknowledging these significant questions, embracing them and wrestling through them as we try to make sense of the Story we live in.

In the past when we’ve hosted these events we’ve been all over the place with our questions. But next week we’re going to try a slightly different approach. We’re going to focus specifically on the topic of the Church and focus on the question: Church – Why Even Bother?

This event is open to anyone (yes, anyone) 18 years of age and older who desires to ask courage questions, listen, dialogue with and learn from others who are wrestling with significant questions – regardless of where you are in your spiritual journey. In past doubt :: nights we’ve had self-proclaimed agnostics, atheists, former Sikhs, New Agers, doubters, Buddhists, Christians, former Christians, skeptics – and just about everything in between.

If you’d like to read about past doubt :: nights or want more context read here, here, here and here.

It’s next Monday September 13 at 7:30p in the meeting room at Third and Walnut Bar and Grille (corner of Third Street and Walnut Street near the Lansdale Train Station).

    Hope you can join us.
