This sign hangs outside a church in the Galilee region in Israel. Dozens of tour groups come each day to this particular church and tour guides share information, context and history of the location. The church, understandably, desires for the building to be silent and reverent, absent of loud conversation.
This context helps us understand the meaning of the sign. However, I can’t help but see the other nuanced meaning – and the irony behind it.
How many people (both outside and inside the church) would nod their head in agreement if they took this sign at face value?
And how might our churches grow be a safe place to ask dangerous questions?
